…it’s instant.

Brick’s way of leaking out facts a single drop at a time is infuriating. The CORE Code revision. The virus. The location of the Sanctuary. Now this “others,” whoever they are. It’s torture!

As I line up one of the provision carts next to another in the lobby, I plead, “Are you enjoying this, Brick? The mystery?”

“Two answers. First, yes. Making you squirm gives me a boost. Honestly. Not in a sadistic way or anything. Just makes my day. Second, why do you think I might be telling you just a little bit at a time? Think.” She taps my cranium. It’s annoying.

“To annoy me. Like when you tap my cranium.”

“Nope. It’s called need-to-know. The less you know, the less risk if you’re captured, or questioned, or teleported, or – OH SHIT.”

“Well, I don’t think I’ll be oh-shitted, whatever that means.”

She yells to Wah across the darkened lobby. “Leave the rest! We gotta go!” She grabs my arm and drags me along as she jogs towards him. “Damn! The transmission! I forgot.”

I struggle to keep up. “Do I want to know what you forgot?”

She gathers the remaining tools and starts pushing the cart towards the entrance at full speed. “We planned for CORE picking up the transmission, in fact we knew it would, because it’s a powerful, global signal – but we calculated it would take weeks for CORE to get units out here, and we’d be long gone by then. But I didn’t count on teleportation. With teleportation…”

A ripple and a flash of light outside the lobby.

A security unit. Pointing a gun in our direction.

Brick whispers, “…it’s instant.”
